Has SIG Sauer Made a Power Move in the 10mm Carry Game?

Then there is SIG, who has long been a quiet 10mm player with assorted versions of the P220 large-frame DA/SA pistol chambered in the caliber. Last year, the company introduced a version of the full-sized P320– the XTen– in a 15+1 shot 10mm offering. That was a “shots fired” moment against the FN 510/Glock 20/XD-M Elite crowd.

Now, this week, SIG has a more carry-sized version of the XTen, the P320 XTen Comp, which has hit the market. It still maintains the 15+1 shot magazine capacity but shrinks the overall length and weight a bit by jettisoning an inch from the standard XTen model. Then it compensates for recoil with the same sort of oh-so-SIG “expansion chamber” slide-based compensator that has been seen on guns like the P-365 XMacro. Added to this is an XCarry series grip module.

The result is a 15+1 shot 10mm striker-fired pistol that is 7.6 inches long with an unloaded weight of 32.3 ounces and has a full Pic rail for accessories and a DeltaPoint Pro optics cut along with day/night sights. SIG bills it as the perfect carry gun for those wandering the backcountry, insurance against predators on either two legs or four.

Stacking it up against its competitors, about the closest in size/capacity would be the XD-M Elite 3.8” Compact OSP 10mm which is 6.75 inches long with an 11+1 capacity, the FN 510 MRD which is 7.7 inches long with a 15+1 capacity, and the Glock 29 Gen4 with a 6.97-inch overall length and 10+1 capacity (but without an optics ready offering.)

Of course, none of these offer the interchangeable FCU capability of the P320– which means easy swap-outs of pistol grip frames down the road if wanted– or include the built-in compensator, so there’s that.

The price of the new carry-friendly SIG 10mm is expected to be around $1,100.
